iPad Screen Replacement: Why Digitiser and LCD Are Two Different Repairs
Share
Of all the misconceptions in device repair, the iPad screen confusion is one of the most persistent. Customers order an LCD when they need a digitiser, or vice versa, and then wonder why the repair didn’t fix the problem. This guide clears that up for good.
The Two Components Explained
An iPad display is made up of two separate layers bonded together. The digitiser is the top glass layer — the touch-sensitive surface you interact with. The LCD assembly (or OLED on Pro models) sits beneath it and produces the actual image. On most iPads, they are sold and replaced separately.
How to Diagnose Which One You Need
- Cracked glass, touch not working, but image is perfect — you need the digitiser only.
- Display shows black lines, bleed, or dead pixels, but touch still works — you need the LCD only.
- Both are broken — order the full assembly.
Which iPad Models Have Bonded Displays
iPad Pro models from 2018 onwards use fully laminated displays where the digitiser and LCD are bonded together and cannot be separated without specialist equipment. For these models, order the full laminated assembly. For older iPad Air, iPad mini, and standard iPad models, the digitiser and LCD can usually be replaced independently.
The Repair Process
Digitiser-only replacements require a heat gun or heating pad to soften the adhesive securing the glass to the frame, followed by careful prying. The replacement glass must be bonded back using OCA (Optically Clear Adhesive) or a pre-cut adhesive frame. Full LCD replacements involve opening the device, disconnecting the ribbon cable connectors, and swapping the panel.
Parts to Order
For older iPad models, order the digitiser and LCD separately. For iPad Pro 2018 and newer, order the full laminated assembly. Always check your specific model number — iPad Air 2 and iPad Air 3, for example, require completely different parts despite similar names. Browse our iPad parts collection to find parts by model.

from 3266 reviewsGreat idea it was a seamless transition to my letterbox, thanks!
Great product, quick customer service.
It was exactly what I needed, and didn't have to wait too long either
Fit really well. Well made product!
Very good screen and easy to replace. Top!!
good texture, where you get a good hold of the phone - great for taking pictures with moto g9 - with a slippery cover it would be difficult - also I like that the magnetic flap is from back to front for easier access to the phone screen
Good! Shipped promptly, delivered within 1 week.
New display installed and worked flawlessly
Fits very well
Very good case in which you still have a feeling with your phones buttons and very good when you have a Child wanting to watch YouTube on your phone
the texture is not slippery, but you get a good hold of your phone - it won's slip from your hand when you take a photo, which with mogoG9 power is awkward to do - the case also has a hole for a wristband
Great for display purposes , took ages to arrive though. They promise delivery in 3-5 days but that’s only after they dispatch, I was waiting 3 weeks.
eveything was just as promised.
Beautiful
